What you can expect from the site, and what it expects back. What this is
Speculativentory is a catalogue of books and a place to keep track of what you read. It is run as a personal project, offered as it is, with no guarantee that it will stay up, stay free, or keep any particular feature.
The catalogue is not authoritative
Most of what you see here was assembled from public data sources and machine-assisted passes over them. Page counts, series order, publication years, genre and mood tags, and the "why you might like this" lines are all best-effort, and some of them are wrong.
Do not rely on anything here for a purchase, a citation or an argument without checking it. If you find something wrong, the report button on the page is the fastest way to say so — reports are read by a person, not a queue.
Your account
- One account per person. Keep your Google sign-in to yourself.
- What you write — notes, collection names, display name — is yours. By putting it here you allow the site to store it and show it to whoever your privacy settings allow.
- Do not post anything unlawful, or anything that targets another reader.
- An account can be suspended or removed if it is being used to abuse the site or someone on it.
Using it fairly
Read, search, shelve and share links as much as you like. What is not on offer:
- Scraping or bulk-downloading the catalogue. Requests are rate-limited, and a crawler that ignores robots.txt will be blocked.
- Re-publishing the catalogue as a dataset of your own.
- Automated account creation, or anything that exists to inflate counts.
Where the data comes from
The catalogue is built from open sources, and some of them require that they be named. They are:
Cover art and author photographs belong to their publishers and photographers. They are shown here to identify the book, and are removed on request from whoever holds the rights.
Affiliate links
The "where to read it" links to Bookshop.org and Amazon carry affiliate tags, which means a purchase made through one may earn this site a small commission at no extra cost to you. It changes nothing about which books are shown or how they are ranked — the catalogue has no idea which books pay.
No warranty, and no liability
The site is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. It may be unavailable, lose data, or be wrong about a book. To the extent the law allows, nobody behind it is liable for any loss arising from using it. Nothing here limits rights you have that cannot be waived.
Changes, and how to reach someone
These terms change when the site does; the date at the top says when last. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it.
There is no public mailbox yet. Until there is, the report button on any book or author page reaches the same person, and the Settings page can export or delete your account without anyone being asked.
