What this site stores, what it never does, and how to get rid of it.
Last updated Oct 19, 2026

The short version

Speculativentory is a reading catalogue. It stores the books you tell it about and the account you signed in with, and nothing else about you. There are no adverts, no third-party analytics, no tracking pixels, and nothing here is sold or shared with anyone for marketing.

You can export everything the site holds about you, or delete it outright, from the Settings page. Neither requires asking permission.

What you give it

Signing in is through Google. Google tells the site your name, your email address and your profile picture; it does not hand over your contacts, your Drive, or anything else, and the site never sees your Google password.

Everything after that is what you record yourself:

  • The books on your shelf, their reading status, your ratings and the dates you started and finished.
  • Your collections, tags, reading queue and any notes you attach.
  • Friend requests, friendships and anything you recommend to someone.
  • Corrections you file with the report button, which are read by hand.
  • Your display name, username and whether your profile is private.

What it records by itself

  • A session cookie, so you stay signed in. It is not an advertising cookie and it is not shared.
  • Your theme and layout choices, kept in your own browser rather than on the server.
  • Ordinary web-server logs, which can include your IP address and which page you asked for. They exist to keep the site up and to stop abuse, and are not used to build a profile of you.

Who else is involved

Three, and only when something on the page needs them:

Nothing is sent to any of them while you simply read a page, apart from the font request. There is no analytics service, no error-reporting service and no advertising network.

What other readers can see

Your profile page, your username and your shelf are visible to other signed-in readers unless you mark your profile private in Settings, in which case only people you have accepted as friends can see them. Collections are private by default and only become visible when you change their visibility yourself.

Signed-out visitors see the catalogue — books, authors, series, awards and editorial lists — and no reader data at all.

Keeping it, and getting rid of it

Your data is kept while your account exists. Settings has two buttons that need no one else involved: one exports everything as a file, the other deletes the account. Deleting removes your shelf, collections, tags, queue, friendships and profile along with it, and it cannot be undone.

Reports you filed are kept after deletion with your name detached, because a correction to the catalogue is about a book rather than about you.

Children

This is not a site for children, and it is not designed or marketed for anyone under 13. If an account turns out to belong to a child, it will be deleted.

Changes, and how to reach someone

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it. Small corrections happen without ceremony.

There is no public mailbox yet. Until there is, the report button on any book or author page reaches the same person, and the Settings page can export or delete your account without anyone being asked.
