Native Tongue Trilogy

This trilogy is set in a future where women are denied civil rights and linguists form a ruling elite by controlling interplanetary communication. The books follow the women's efforts to spread their language, first through the church and then by taking their project underground after aliens abandon Earth, leading to economic disaster.
