Born March 29, 1948, Blom grew up in Minneapolis/St. Paul. She attended college in Sioux City IA, studying ancient history, before moving to Milwaukee WI, where she worked as a VISTA volunteer for the local tenant's union. She settled in Milwaukee, and later became a tax preparer.
